Description
A Research Technologist is sought to help with NIH funded research projects in the Naghavi lab in the Department of Microbiology-Immunology at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University in Chicago. The technologist will assist organizing the laboratory (e.g. checking on lab supplies and purchases/ordering of lab stocks as well as organization of laboratory stock inventories). With time permitting the technologist will also directly participate in research projects studying the role of host factors in HIV infection following established protocols as well as helping in the development of new experimental protocols.
The Research Technologist will follow appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.
The individual working in this position is expected to have training in basic biological sciences. Good organization and communication skills are essential. Ability to work with others in a group environment is important.
Specific Responsibilities:
•        Assist in organizing the lab as described above
•        Assist in research projects using a wide variety of standard molecular virology techniques including but not limited to: tissue culture and viral infections in BSL2 and BSL2+ facilities, western blotting, PCR and cloning, plasmid preparations and transfections, RNA prep, cDNA synthesis and quantitative PCR, protein purification, ELISA, immunofluorescence as well as fixed and live cell imaging using a spin-disk confocal microscope.
•        Record and maintain data
•        Keep an accurate lab notebook
•        Confer with supervisor on a regular basis for analysis of data, assessment of progress and direction of research


Skills
•        A bachelor’s degree in a basic science, biological science or chemistry;
•        A minimum of one year of relevant experience;
•        Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols;
•        Attention to detail and accurate record keeping;
•        Punctuality
