Description
The newly developed Center for Host-Pathogen Interaction housed in the department of Microbiology & Immunology is a research program whose academic links to three departments -- Microbiology & Immunology, Pediatrics, and Physiology & Biophysics – support a rich academic environment. The initiative is designed around the interdisciplinary theme of virus-host interactions. Projects draw from strategies and methods of molecular biology, cell biology, biophysics, immunology, computational biology, structural biology, and virology. The laboratories conduct basic research on paramyxoviruses that cause serious and prevalent childhood diseases, and on newly emerging human RNA viruses that are increasingly the source of global epidemics.Anne Moscona’s laboratory is looking for postdoctoral scientists to work with a team of scientists to explore the host-virus interaction at the stage of viral entry into host cells, molecular mechanisms of the entry process in functional and structural detail, and the relationship between the entry process and viral evolution, fitness, and transmissibility. Information about the mechanisms of entry and viral fusion provides the opportunity to use new screening paradigms to identify compounds that are effective at preventing viral entry and that will represent potential new treatments for infectious diseases.

Skills
Candidates must have received a PhD in biochemistry, biology, or an equivalent within the last 5 years. Ideally, the successful candidate will have extensive experience with common wet bench techniques such as tissue culture, molecular biology (e.g. cloning, RNA/DNA extraction, RT-qPCR), biochemistry (e.g. western blotting), immunocytochemistry and fluorescence microscopy. Applicants with computational or bioinformatics experience or relevant background in EM (including cryo) are also encouraged.
The applicant should be self-motivated and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. S/he should also have outstanding organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and be able to work independently as well as within a team.
