Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (“Fred Hutch” or “the Center”) is one of the premier cancer research centers in the world and home to three Nobel laureates. Fred Hutch is an independent, nonprofit research institution, located on a magnificent campus in the South Lake Union area of Seattle. With the mission of eliminating cancer and related diseases as causes of human suffering and death, the Center conducts research of the highest standards to improve prevention and treatment of cancer and related diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation, Fred Hutch’s five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science.

To fulfill its mission, Fred Hutch is dedicated to:

Generating new scientific discoveries and translating them into effective medical practices, therapies, and public health approaches;

The scientific palette of Fred Hutch is extensive; it has over 270 research scientists, 2,800 employees and numerous fellows, doctoral and post-doctoral students. Areas of research focus include hematologic malignancies, solid tumor biology, immunotherapy, early detection, tumor research, international research, fundamental science, cancer and prevention research, infectious disease, data science, global oncology and HIV/AIDS. Fred Hutch has five scientific divisions: Basic Sciences, Clinical Research, Human Biology, Public Health Sciences, and Vaccine and Infectious Disease. The Center has recently established crosscutting integrated research centers organized to promote team science involving members from two or more of the scientific divisions. Center-level administrative operations and services such as Finance, Information Technology, Development and Human Resources are delivered through departments within the Administrative Division. The Administrative Division also contains several research-specific functions, including Shared Resources, the Institutional Review Office and the Clinical Research Services Office.


The Vice President, Research Administration position has been created to bring all Center-wide direct research administration units together under a single leader. The position will also have dotted line oversight of the top administrators within each of the Scientific Divisions and Integrated Research Centers and will be responsible for overseeing Center-level functions that support the Center’s education programs.


Specifically, the VP, Research Administration will have direct responsibility for the following departments and functions:

The Institutional Research Office
The Clinical Research Services Office
Shared Resources
Environmental Health and Safety
Cancer Center Support Grant Administration
Scientific Ombudsman/Office of Scientific Career Development
Support services for Research Education and Outreach
Administration of conflict-of-interest management
Centralized service for storage, maintenance and retrieval of faculty records such as bio-sketches and advancement and promotion
The position will have dotted line oversight of:

The Senior Directors of Operations of the Scientific Divisions
The Administrative Directors of the Integrated Research Centers and
The Senior Administrative Director for the Therapeutic Products Program, a unique and administratively distinct shared resource function

The Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) currently reports into Finance. Depending on the experience and qualifications of the final candidate, this function may be assigned to the VP, Research Administration.


The Vice President, Research Administration will:

Ensure that all research administration operations support the needs of the Center community
Ensure that all research activities comply with laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines that govern externally sponsored research activities in addition to addressing ever-growing research volumes
Foster collaborative relationships with the Fred Hutch’s administrative departments
Strive to reduce administrative burden and improve efficiencies and service to the research enterprise, including with respect to processes involving the Fred Hutch’s key affiliation partners, the University of Washington (UW), Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH)
Advocate for the research enterprise across Fred Hutch and in working with UW, SCCA, and SCH, as well as nationally through professional and institutional organizations

Strategy, Vision and Leadership

Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values innovation and learning, and a commitment to service and quality
Develop and mentor staff based on goals, accountability, objectives and priorities
Directly, or through staff: Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish goals and objectives; oversee recruitment, training, supervision, and performance evaluation of staff
Provide leadership and guidance to establish and maintain appropriate infrastructure for the research enterprise
In collaboration with other leaders, ensure the development and implementation of proactive programs to support the faculty in the establishment of a research culture conducive to responsible conduct of research
Serve as key point of contact for all external audits related to the research enterprise. Oversee any findings and recommendations ensuring compliance.
Establish and implement short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures related to the research enterprise; monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness and implement changes required for improvement
Align policies and procedures to determine which should be organization-wide and which should be specific to scientific divisions or individual scientific divisions
In collaboration with Center IT, create a Research Administration IT roadmap including current and future state in order to be strategic with decision-making and involve operational staff in the planning and execution of those systems
Coordinating with Center executive leadership, collaborate closely with UW and SCCA on matters where decisions are madethat have impacts on research and vice versa
Develop staff on research administration matters;define mandatory training and how best to deliver, resource, and measure key objectives
Develop and implement a metrics driven culture with training, tools, infrastructure, and a leadership expectation of metrics and measures



The Vice President, Research Administration at Fred Hutch will first be passionate about the cause of eradicating cancer and other related diseases. The Center seeks a leader with the highest level of personal integrity and professional ethics. The science undertaken by Fred Hutch is at the cutting edge of human knowledge and continuously expanding those boundaries. The Vice President will aspire to build a research administration and academic affairs program with a level of professionalism and achievement parallel to that of the Center’s scientists and all other colleagues.

The Vice President will be a highly experienced leader of people and programs, with the vision necessary to establish aggressive goals and objectives for the program and the combination of experience and leadership qualities necessary to lead the program through change and growth to the fulfillment of those objectives. Doing so will require intelligence, strong management skills, decisiveness, fortitude, a high level of personal energy, and the ability to bring critical aspects of research across all science divisions together with a common purpose.

The candidate must possess the following skills, experience and attributes:

Advanced degree (MA, MBA, MPA, PhD) and at least ten years of research administration experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in non-profit research environments preferred.
Strong leadership skills and leadership presence
Self-starter and able to work independently within established parameters
Excellent judgment and discretion; impeccable personal integrity and reputation
Persistence, adaptability, emotional intelligence, curiosity, and the ability to multi-task
Organized and accountable; able to cut through complexity and ambiguity, prioritize effectively, set clear goals and operate in an agile fashion
A collegial attitude and willingness to work in concert with the senior executive team to fulfill strategic organizational objectives; comfort interacting at senior executive levels
Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies and guidelines
Demonstrated commitment to a diverse and inclusive workforce and work environment
Ability to effectively represent the Center within the research and business community
Knowledge of proposal funding policies and procedures and applicable local, state, and federal regulations
Skill and commitment to develop, implement, evaluate and re-engineer strategy, operations, policies and procedures skills in organizing resources and establishing priorities
Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
Ability to lead and mentor technical and professional staff in the performance of research administration
Extensive knowledge of the laws, regulations, and policies related to research compliance such as protection of human participants, research safety, and cost-accounting standards
Sound knowledge of Federal and other regulations (current and emerging) governing sponsored projects administration
Excellent communication skills and ability to interact knowledgeably with both faculty and staff at all levels
Demonstrated experience leading business process improvement, organizational change initiatives, and familiarity with information systems implementation
