Description
The Emory-UGA Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance (CEIRS) funded by NIH/NIAID is currently looking for a DVM or PhD to study the following objectives with these specific aims: Perform near real-time influenza virus sequencing for CEIRS, and contribute to and build an integrated sequencing system that begins with web-based submission of sequencing requests and includes tracking of sequencing status, culminating in automated submission of sequences to the CEIRS Data Processing and Coordinating Center (DPCC; http://www.niaidceirs.org/centers/dpcc/) for distribution to investigators and NCBI repositories.

Aim 1: To increase sequencing capacity and decrease turn-around for the CEIRS network using sequencing technologies.
Aim 2: To enable sequencing directly from low-titer clinical isolates, including Tier 1 and highly pathogenic strains of influenza virus.
Aim 3: Swine influenza viruses (SIVs) isolated from our commercial partners will be sequenced and selected based on their evolutionary analysis and antigenic distance from their predecessors.

We expect to generate critical information about the risk of SIV in the human population, and determine whether seasonal influenza vaccination may offer protection against genetically- related SIV. We will identify SIV that may pose a higher risk to human health, and alert our collaborators in the swine industry. Progress reports will be provided monthly and the results will be disseminated through conference presentations and publications in peer-review journals. We expect at least two publications from this study.
