Technical On-site Professional Services (TOPS) is a part of the Energy, Health and Environment Business and provides laboratory support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. TOPS is seeking a Molecular Virologist to join a team focused on influenza vaccine research and development. The position is located in the Influenza Division (ID) of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), CCID, CDC at the Roybal Campus, Atlanta, Georgia. TOPS is working with HHS/CDC in supporting efforts for pandemic influenza preparedness. Salary will be determined based on education and experience.

The CDC ID provides critical standards for pandemic preparedness to the US State Public Health Laboratories and acts as a World Health Organization (WHO) reference laboratory supporting international influenza surveillance and response networks. Rapid genetic and antigenic characterization of circulating viral strains coupled with vaccine development are essential components to increase pandemic readiness and response. TOPS is supporting CDC in research and development efforts to eliminate data gaps in influenza surveillance by increasing the diagnostic and immunization tools available to clinical providers, public health laboratories and domestic and international partners. Monitoring influenza viruses through the application of molecular technologies and incorporation of laboratory surveillance with classic epidemiology facilitate detection of new epidemic variants and provide complete and accurate information about influenza viruses posing a pandemic threat. The use of viral genomics and surveillance studies will provide candidate viruses for pre-pandemic and pandemic vaccine development to assist decision makers in formulating management strategies needed during an influenza outbreaks, epidemics or pandemic.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The successful candidate will play a critical role in the development of new approaches to generate influenza vaccine candidate viruses in compliance with good laboratory practice (GLP) regulatory requirements. The incumbent will perform virological, genomic, and functional characterization of vaccine viruses from cell culture or eggs. The applicant will be self-motivated and must have strong expertise in viral genomics/sequencing, molecular virology, and/or classical virology. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in reverse genetics of influenza viruses, working with respiratory viruses in Biosafety Level 3 environments, GLP laboratories, and/or the use of laboratory animals (e.g., mice or ferrets).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct influenza genomic sequencing, analyze and interpret the data.
Develop new methods or vectors to improve efficiency of influenza virus rescue by reverse genetics.
Construct and characterize various customized plasmid DNA molecules.
Rescue, propagation and characterization of influenza viruses in compliance with good laboratory practice (GLP) guidelines
Virus purification from cell culture or eggs by sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation
Perform real-time PCR for virus detection and quantification.
Biochemical/biophysical analysis of virus particles and virus antigen quantification.
Develop new methods for virus and vaccine antigen quantification.
Develop new strategies for improving influenza vaccine immunogenicity, stability and antigen yield in eggs.
Conduct vaccine safety evaluations in small animal models.
Meet urgent demands of mitigating emerging influenza viruses with pandemic potential
Maintain organization and proficiency in Biosafety Level 3 laboratory
Prepare study reports for leadership and manuscripts for publication in scientific journals
Communicate progress orally and in writing with technical monitor and other researchers
Assist the technical monitor with preparation of reports, presentations and papers for publication in scientific journals.


Skills
THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
BS 5-8 yrs, MS 2-5 years or PhD, MD, DVM or equivalent plus relevant experience in Virology.
Demonstrated expertise with influenza virus sequencing and/or related molecular virology
Experience with influenza reverse genetics and/or reverse genetics of other RNA viruses
Highly motivated person with meticulous working habits, precise record-keeping, and strong organizational skills
The selected candidate will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance
