Dr MEZ laboratory of microbiology and virology, School of Health Sciences, University of KwaZulu Natal is searching for masters and PhD students who will join research projects in microbiology and virology. Interested postgraduate student candidates will work in research areas including antimicrobial resistance of ESKAPE pathogens, zoonotic infections, Epidemiology, and pathogen surveillance. Successful candidates will be received UKZN Postgraduate scholarships for the period of their masters and PhD studies. Candidates who already have their own funding and/or have received scholarships and look for host laboratory are welcome to apply as well.


Applicants applying to masters program: A bachelor degree in science/Veterinary Medicine/Medical Sciences/Pharmacy.

Applicants applying to PhD program: MS degree preferably in microbiology or closely related including veterinary and bio/medical sciences including virology and immunology and demonstrated experience in standard microbiological methods.
• Bachelor or Master of Science degree in microbiology, immunology, genetics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or other closely related discipline.
• Wet-lab experience in basic molecular biology techniques
•Strong commitment to learning and developing scientific skills.
•Excellent verbal and written communication, capable of working independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
•Experience in next generation sequencing data analysis
•Self-motivated, enthusiastic and willing to apply their skills and to learn new skills to tackle important biological problems related to infectious disease.
•Prior experience working in the biological fields of microbiology, virology or molecular biology.
•Experience in producing written documents and scientific reports relevant to the communication of laboratory results, including scientific articles, conference abstracts, and progress reports.
