Description
This position serves as an advanced technologist in a clinical laboratory that performs rabies necropsy, cell culture, viral culture, and molecular technical assays for the detection of viruses causing various infectious diseases.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist II will:
Perform assays as well as provide technical leadership and training for other personnel who perform highly technical viral culture and molecular procedures for the detection of viral pathogens.
Interpret data and report test results and interpretations accurately and in a timely manner.
Provide consultation with medical personnel and program area staff regarding test availability, results, and interpretations.


Skills
Must have demonstrated technical skills in performing and troubleshooting microbiological, virological, and serological procedures and the technical and theoretical background to interpret laboratory results.
Must have a basic theoretical knowledge of the pathogenesis of the organism in question and how the medical laboratory science is applied.
Must have demonstrated experience in working with potentially infectious materials and must know the appropriate precautions to take to avoid infection.
Must have demonstrated ability to provide medical consultation to other healthcare providers.
Work requires ability to distinguish colors and close visual acuity to perform data analysis and visual inspection of specimens using standard laboratory equipment.
Use of laboratory equipment requires ability to manipulate items with fingers, ability to grasp, and ability to feel / perceive the attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture.
Works frequently with infectious diseases, which requires the use of personal protective equipment.
Immunization against rabies is a precondition of employment within the rabies laboratory, along with periodic serological assessments of immunization to ensure that the employee maintains an adequate level of immunization.


Notes
The successful candidate for this position must meet the CLIA '88 requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity laboratory. Candidates must attach a copy of their transcripts to the application or provide an unofficial copy of their transcripts at the time of the interview.
