Multiple positions for a post-baccalaureate research assistant in virology and immunology are available at the Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, MD. Research projects focus on various aspects of innate response to viral infection by respiratory epithelial cells or development of new methods using high throughput proteomic technologies for detection, quantification, and characterization of environmental allergens. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant is expected to conduct experiments, summarize and interpret results, and participate in writing of a manuscript for publication. Candidates who are looking for research experience prior to applying to graduate or medical school are encouraged to apply. Telephone/Skype interviews will be conducted for out of state candidates and in-person interviews are preferred for candidates living in DC-Maryland-Virginia area.
This program is administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education and was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of the FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at the FDA in the Silver Spring, Maryland. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Bachelor's degree from a US-accredited institution in one of the biological sciences: biology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology or pre-med received within the last two years. Previous experience in cell culture methods and/or virology is desirable. The ideal candidate should be highly motivated with good interpersonal communication skills and attention to detail, and possess sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork.
