A fully funded Staff Research Associate I position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Laura Hertel at the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (

The successful candidate will participate in research on: 1) human cytomegalovirus tropism for myeloid cells such as dendritic cells; 2) human cytomegalovirus latency mecahnisms and 3) the ability of specific viral proteins to inhibit dendritic cells migration.

Duties include: 1) tissue culture: maintain and expand different types of primary and immortalized cell lines, produce and titer stocks of various strains of human cytomegalovirus; 2) perform standard laboratory procedures such as immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry staining analysis of human tissues and cells, transwell migration assays with specific immune cells, mRNA and genomic DNA isolations, genomic and reverse-transcription PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis and western blotting; 3) maintain lab equipment and reagents in optimal working conditions.

Minimum qualifications: BA/BS in Biology or related discipline and some prior lab experience. ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED: superb problem solving and logical thinking skills; practical knowledge of mammalian cell culture techniques and of molecular biology methods including immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry staining analyses, reverse transcription and genomic PCR, nucleic acid electrophoresis and western blotting. Excellent oral communication abilities in English. Capacity to work well with minimal supervision and under pressure. Proactivity and willingness to go the extra mile when needed. General familiarity with computer systems (MS office programs).
