Description
As part of a new university-wide emphasis on Global Systems Science, Virginia Tech is hiring a cluster of at least six faculty members in the area of infectious disease across four colleges and an Institute. The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology (http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/departments/dbsp/) in the College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in virology, with an emphasis on zoonotic/emerging infectious diseases. The appointment is expected to be at the rank of assistant professor, but more senior applicants will be considered.

A primary responsibility of the position will be to establish and maintain a high-quality extramurally funded research program. There will also be opportunities to co-teach in professional (DVM) and graduate (MS, MPH, PhD) courses. The department has an internationally recognized infectious diseases program, with active projects involving use of animal models of infectious diseases, vaccine development, and investigation of microbial pathogenesis and host-pathogen interactions. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with the potential to develop an internationally recognized research program that complements the expertise of our existing viral infectious diseases program and contributes substantively to global systems sciences, which involves use of an integrated systems-level approach to understanding and managing the emergence of infectious diseases and the relevance of the relationships between microbial organisms, their animal and human hosts, and the environment. For more information about the College and Department, please visit http://www.vetmed.vt.edu/. Information about Virginia Tech’s strategic planning process (“Beyond Boundaries” and the Global Systems Science destination area) and research institutes that support virology research can be found at http://www.beyondboundaries.vt.edu/about.html and https://www.research.vt.edu/institutes/index.php, respectively.

Full consideration is assured to applications received by April 1, 2017. Interested individuals should electronically submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching interests, a letter of intent outlining academic record and career goals, and names and contact information of three professional references at http://www.jobs.vt.edu, posting TR0160184 [https://listings.jobs.vt.edu/postings/72721]. Inquiries about the position should be directed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. X.J. Meng, University Distinguished Professor, (540 231-6912, xjmeng@vt.edu).

Skills
Candidate requirements for this position include a Ph.D. related biomedical science and a strong record of research funding and publications.
