Description
This position serves as an advanced technologist in a clinical laboratory that performs routine and reference testing of serum and other bodily fluids for the detection of antibodies and antigens to various infectious diseases. Evaluation of specimens for these infectious agents involves the utilization of a variety of highly technical automated and semi-automated procedures with strict demands for quality assurance.   

The incumbent in this position will:

Serve as the lead worker both performing assays and providing technical leadership and training for other personnel who perform various highly technical automated, semi-automated, and manual immunoassay tests for HIV, Hepatitis, and Rubella.
Be responsible for the evaluation, performance, and introduction of advanced serological techniques for the detection of HIV, Rubella, and Hepatitis in patient samples.
Coordinate the laboratory testing of specimens, perform assays, and manage results data.
Provide consultation with medical personnel and program area staff regarding test availability, results, and interpretations.
Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
Resolve technical problems and ensure that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Order, maintain, and prepare highly specialized reagents and supplies needed to perform assays.

Skills
The successful candidate for this position must meet the CLIA '88 requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity laboratory. Candidates must attach a copy of their transcripts to the application or provide an unofficial copy of their transcripts at the time of the interview.
Basic theoretical knowledge of the pathogenesis of the organism in question and how the medical laboratory science is applied
Awareness of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and the appropriate precautions to take to avoid infection
Experience in technical and theoretical background to perform and troubleshoot test procedures and interpret laboratory results
Ability to work independently, involving only minimal supervision

Management Preferences:
MT(ASCP) with previous HIV, Hepatitis, and/or Rubella serologic testing experience using automated test platforms
Prior experience with lead testing responsibilities
Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and to instruct others in highly complex technical procedures.

Physical Requirements:
Works frequently with infectious diseases, which require the use of personal protective equipment.
Work requires ability to distinguish colors and close visual acuity to perform data analysis and visual inspection of specimens using standard laboratory equipment.
Use of laboratory equipment requires ability to manipulate items with fingers, ability to grasp, and ability to feel/perceive the attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of medical laboratory experience; or Associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of medical laboratory experience.
