This position serves as a technologist in a clinical laboratory that performs routine and reference testing of serum and other bodily fluids for the detection of antibodies and antigens to various infectious diseases. Evaluation of specimens for these infectious agents involves the utilization of a variety of highly technical automated and semi-automated procedures with strict demands for quality assurance.   

The incumbent in this position will:            

Provide testing capacity for the Special Serology Laboratory by performing exceptionally sophisticated, complex laboratory procedures (indirect fluorescent antibody assays, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and molecular-based assays such as PCR) for the detection of various infectious diseases, including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, ehrlichiosis, arboviruses such as West Nile Virus and Zika, measles, mumps, and varicella zoster
Be responsible for performing tests accurately and in the established turn-around time, as well as recording and evaluating daily quality control for each assigned assay
Perform, record, and evaluate daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on equipment used in the laboratory
Interpret test results to reflect patient antibody status for diagnostic and/or immune status purposes.

Basic knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot serological and molecular procedures and equipment and the technical and theoretical background to interpret laboratory results
Must have a basic theoretical knowledge of the pathogenesis of the organism in question and how the medical laboratory science is applied
Must be aware of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and must know the appropriate precautions to take to avoid infection

Management Preferences
Management prefers MT(ASCP) with previous indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) and/or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) serological testing experience using semi-automated test platforms
Must be able to express oneself clearly verbally and in writing, be capable of understanding and following complex oral and written instructions, and of instructing others in highly complex technical procedures

Physical Requirements
Works frequently with infectious diseases, which require the use of personal protective equipment.
Work requires ability to distinguish colors and close visual acuity to perform data analysis and visual inspection of specimens using standard laboratory equipment.
Use of laboratory equipment requires ability to manipulate items with fingers, ability to grasp, and ability to feel/perceive the attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture.
