Description
This position serves as an advanced technologist in a clinical laboratory that performs rabies necropsy, cell culture, viral culture, and molecular technical assays for the detection of viruses causing various infectious diseases.   Evaluation of specimens for these infectious agents involves the utilization of a variety of highly technical semi-automated and manual procedures with strict demands for quality assurance.   

The incumbent in this position will:

Serve at the senior level as the lead worker both performing assays and providing technical leadership and training for other personnel who perform highly technical viral culture and molecular procedures for the detection of viral pathogens
Provide testing capacity for the Viral Culture/Rabies Laboratory by performing rabies necropsy, rabies testing, viral culture, and molecular methodologies for the detection of pathogenic human viruses in clinical specimens
Provide consultation with medical personnel and program area staff regarding test availability, results, and interpretations
Be responsible for the evaluation, performance, and introduction of advanced techniques for the detection of viruses in patient samples
Be responsible for coordinating laboratory testing of specimens, data management of results, and development and maintenance of an electronic database for management of rabies test related data and information exchange with CDC
Review final reports prior to release to ensure accuracy in testing, proper result interpretation, and timely reporting of results for the program.

Skills
The successful candidate for this position must meet the CLIA '88 requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity laboratory. Candidates must attach a copy of their transcripts to the application or provide an unofficial copy of their transcripts at the time of the interview
Knowledge of principles and procedures applicable to infectious disease testing
Experience performing routine virologic and molecular procedures
Knowledge of and experience to troubleshoot microbiological, virological, and serological procedures and equipment and the technical and theoretical background to interpret laboratory results
Knowledge of the pathogenesis of viral and bacterial agents and how the medical laboratory science is applied to allow for their detection
Awareness of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and the appropriate precautions to take to avoid infection
