BU is rapidly building a disciplined research support environment that empowers faculty and students—from engineering and medicine, to the sciences, the arts, and the humanities—to tackle challenging questions with creative, out-of-the-box thinking and the most advanced technology available. One of my principal goals as Vice President and Associate Provost for Research is to work with the academic leadership to eliminate real and perceived barriers between campuses, schools, departments, and disciplines. In the spirit of “One BU,” we are fostering an engaged and collaborative community where our faculty, students, and research staff are free to think big and take risks.

The best testament to this spirit is the fact that our researchers are not afraid to reach across disciplines to use multifaceted approaches to solve the complex problems facing society today. To support these initiatives, we have been working on developing interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in neuroscience, material science, and bioinformatics and systems biology, to name a few, that are creating a new generation of scholars capable of combining a broad appreciation of the “big” questions with a deep understanding of at least one traditional discipline.
